- Historical Information (taken from certificate):
Okeechobee County was created from parts of Osceola and St. Lucie Counties in 1917. The county seat is Okeechobee or Okeechobee City. It is the only city in the county and was originally called "Tantie" after settler Tantie Huckaby.
The original Okeechobee County Courthouse dates from 1926, following the approval of legislation authorizing the sale of bonds. The architect was George Gaynor Hyde and the structure was built by the firm of Rogers and Duncanson at an estimated cost of $200,000. In today's economy, the building would cost an estimated $5,000,000.
The first judge was the Honorable George Cleveland Durrance who served from 1925-1933. The last judge was the Honorable Shirley Brennan who served from 1996-2006. The courthouse is currently being used for county government offices.
