- Historical Information (taken from certificate):
The Tantie School was built in 1909, eight years before Okeechobee County was formed.
It was located at what is now the corner of S.W. 5th Street and S. Parrott Ave. and was designated School #14 by St. Lucie County. This area was first called "The Bend". In 1902, the stellement was named Tantie for teacher Tantie Huckaby. Tanties was renamed Okeechobee in 1911.
By the fall of 1915, the school became so crowded, a tent had to be set up for the over-flow. (This was Okeechobee's first portable classroom.)
In 1916, construction began on the new two-story brick school. The old school became a private residence and was occupied until 1976, when the Watts family sold it to the Okeechobee Historical Society. The building was moved to its current location on U.S. Hwy. 98 next to the Historical Society Museum on September 20, 1976.
On December 3, 2009, the 100th anniversary of Tantie School was celebrated at the school by the Okeechobee Historical Society. The School House and Museum are open to visitors on Thursdays from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. and other times upon request.
